Laura Jane Cooper

I make work with a strong performative element shown in mediums of video, sound, installation and live performance. My works are often documents of choreographed and repetitive exercises between individuals. Exploring boundaries of communication, control and negotiation between people is one of my primary interests, and as such I sometimes engage with close family members, specific groups of local people or audiences. Themes of deconstruction, destruction recur in my work, which has expanded from intimate performance to camera works more recently to public performance engaging several performers. I am interested in personal and collective actions and contemporary ritual and how these can be sustain and created. My work uses play to engage people in to absurd, poetic and transformative actions, that utilise specific materials and sites. I use composition and structure to examine group social behaviour, exposing deviation from rules and uniformity, through exposing human error and individual will. read full statement
