Katharine Swailes

Artist, Maker, Digital designer, Researcher

Swailes has created textiles for over 20 years, specifically working in tapestry for the last decade. She specialises in both conventional flat wall works and smaller three-dimensional, sculptural pieces - as well as weaving large scale commissions at West Dean Tapestry Studio - and is interested in the constructively open ended nature of the medium. A piece such as 4 Enclosures, 2007, exemplifies the artists approach to small scale, multi textural pieces. It is comprised of four enclosed segments, each containing an object - whether made of wax, chalk, or wool - related to costume design, though displayed as stated by the artist herself, in a "fossil like quality" to evoke ideas of unchanged nature of tapestry medium over a millennia of existence.
