When you look at stone you see time in a solid form, millions of years worth. I make sculpture that keeps this essence of the ancient, but I try to view stone with fresh eyes, and produce work that surprises and intrigues. Craftsmanship is extremely important to me, and I work stone using traditional techniques, but in a contemporary way, producing quirky, original, well made sculpture. I have used many different types of stone, my favourite is Portland. It takes a huge amount of effort and human endeavour to quarry stone, a precious resource extracted from our land. I have an emotional link to the stone that is local to me, so I enjoy using it, and Portland is a great stone for sculpture. Working stone on a large scale can be quite a feat of engineering, but I hugely enjoy the challenge. The creative side, designing a site specific sculpture, collaborating with the client to produce something that fulfils their brief, but still has my sculptural style in abundance. I also like the organising involved in producing and placing a large piece of work. I produce small work for exhibition, I find this keeps the ideas flowing, and keeps me developing in new directions. read full statement
