Artist Statement

I work with a range of materials and experimental techniques in my practice to produce drawings, paintings and textiles. One of the prominent themes in my work focuses on an interest in knowing how things are constructed, who they were made by, which tools were used, whether these were hand or machine made and where they are situated within the domestic and the industrial. I am fascinated by the skills (and the loss of skills) involved in ‘making’ and the process of production of (often ordinary) objects; and how changing demands and techniques become obsolete or superseded by the advancement of technology, engineering and society. These lost techniques become histories in their own right, with the tools of manufacture being of particular interest to me alongside the human stories of the craftsmen, makers and producers of objects. A recent focus in my practice has been on hand tools whether professional ‘tools of the trade’ or tools used in domestic situations; all of which come under close observation and scrutiny.
