Jonathan Mitchell

St Albans

For the last twenty-five years I have worked with bodies, objects and environments, producing in-process pieces from direct observation and imagination. My aim is to help promote stability through the relationships formed by society around and with its art.My artistic practice is significantly influenced by Cézanne, Picasso and the experience of working in the Life Rooms at the Slade School of Fine Art. The cast sculpture, 'Multi-Storey Dream Babe' relates to modular architecture.

I received my education at the Slade School of Fine Art. I gained an MA in Painting in 1985 and graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art in 1983.I was selected for Christie's Pick of the graduate shows in 1983 and received the Elizabeth Greenshields Award  for research in 1988. After college I worked on archaeological projects in Dorset. I cut and recorded sections and made detailed drawings of major finds, including the ribs of a medieval ship. I would like that combination of structured response and joyful discovery to be present in my current and future work.
