Gillian Brent

Artist, Gallery educator

Gillian Brent works in response to particular parameters that she sets herself and to those imposed on her. Certain elements remain constant while others change depending on a current line of enquiry, project or site for the work. The sculpture is constructed using formal, spatial and aesthetic relationships that allude to existing objects (architectural, industrial, functional), creating new ones that synthesise her experiences and perceptions of the world. Gillian works mainly with welded steel, embracing its structural and industrial applications, while subverting and humanising them. The constructive and reductive process is fundamental to her way of working, in the extracting and honing of meaning from material. A large part of Gillian's practice is collaborative. She works with all sorts of people, in art galleries and with schools, youth groups and other community groups on creative learning projects and commissions to make artworks for their locality. read full statement
