Frances Carlile

Ludlow
Sculpture constructed from found natural materials, branches, thorns, heather, seaweed. Print used to enrich the work with echoes of myths and fairy tales.

I work directly with the landscape in sculpture and print. Both as a source of inspiration and of materials found. I use fragments of the real landscape from hedgerows, moreland and the sea shore. These are either cast or plated or used as found, and constructed into fragile sculpture. I use motifs of house, tree and boat to explore ideas of solitude and stillness. They provide scale in an otherwise limitless landscape. The prints provide depth and enrich the work. They are often concerned with imaginary situations, with echoes of myths and fairy tales. Drawing is a way of travelling through the work, a means of reinvention.

My prefered way of working is to make a complete exhibition or project using different elements: sculpture, print, drawing and to allow the interaction between the works to create greater depth. I also enjoy working with others where the unexpected and the unplanned can happen.
