Elaine Brown

Artist, Film-maker, Teacher

My art practice encompasses painting, drawing, photography and film. Ideas of time, memory, mortality, the trace, hidden narratives, absence and presence and stillness underly the work. I frequently use photographic media as source material and recently I have been using stilled images from my own 16mm films as a starting point for paintings. The process of depiction brings these images into the present rather than the past moments of the snapshot or procession of stills in film and alters them naturally through the filter of the artist's hand. What emerges through touch is an expression of time and of the self. read full statement
