Filtering Through is an installation created for the exhibition Health Records in response to the experience of delivering workshops on the Renal Unit at the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

The installation presents extracts of the rich array of individual personalities encountered while on the ward and recognises the resilience of human nature. The piece considers the home as both a physical and psychological space and uses analogy to draw comparisons between domestic systems and functions of the body with waste water pipes referencing the pipe work circulating blood between the dialysis machine and patient.

Selected narratives are depicted in miniature on the ‘supporting’ domestic scale pipe work structure. The exaggeration of scale with the juxtaposition of the life size and the miniature is used to highlight how the patient’s daily life and familiar surroundings become subsumed by the medical treatment.
