I am a painter, and I am fascinated by the formal and material things of painting, but in the last few years I have been exploring 3D, having small bronze figures made, as well as developing ceramic work, and in my recent painting I have been trying to reconcile these 3D explorations, embodiment, characterisation, shifts in scale, with composition and formal interests that have come from a recently developing interest in modernist aesthetics. This is extending the game that I have played up till now with depiction and its problems, which has been informed by my interests in Watteau, Manet, 19th and early 20th century British painting, Bay Area Figuration, the Nabis and Proustian memory, and 1980s British Figuration.
