Brenda Oakes

Artist, Arts administrator, Project manager, Consultant, Researcher

Brenda Oakes, MA is an award-winning international artist and designer. Trained as a sculptor, her practice now encompasses other skills which are diverse and wide-ranging. In Britain she has created new public spaces for several local authorities whilst invitations are received to create art for collections around the world. Having worked as an artist in many global locations since 1995, in 2009 Brenda received a prestigious Creative Wales Award which enabled her to begin an ongoing investigation into what she perceives to be the closely linked areas of dowsing and drawing. This award enabled her to spend more than a year in her studio in the Neath Valley in South Wales allowing her a breathing space in which to reflect on her 25 years working in both her private practice but mainly being employed in the public realm. One of the outcomes of this time of contemplation is the change of direction for Brenda who now enjoys a much broader range of art activity encompassing collaborative working, exhibiting more frequently, new thinking, new approaches, and new kinds of art but most importantly of all, more freedom and risk taking. read full statement
