Early career

The aspiration of my painting through drawing is to respond to the language and history of landscape in a 21st century context to assert the interconnection between man/woman and nature. I am concerned with the forensics and history of what we really see in the landscape which is often recorded in the naming of places. Beyond the 'picturesque' of landscape lies another history; one of birth, death, betrayal, renewal. Through my drawings I decipher the puzzle, or rebus, that landscape presents, conscious that the elements of earth, fire, water and air are joined in some cultures by a fifth element, wood. Landscape is not just about looking but about smell, sound and touch. It is the interconnectivity of all of these elements that interests me; that something beyond the surface. Paul Nash described it as the 'magic' within landscape. read full statement
