Tekton series explores the compositional possibilities available from a single plane of rigid material.
I draw with the sheet and a knife; rapidly, intuitively, precisely, dynamically in three dimensions, an ‘embodied mind’ in space and time.
The first cut determines the next and so on – form follows counter form – until all the pieces of a rectangular plane are used up – no waste or additional material. If I don’t have enough, then I have to rework what I have – I stop when I am convinced of the object.
I employ a constellation of contemporary concepts, traditional fine art techniques, craft skills, engineering and cutting edge digital technologies to meticulously construct the sculpture.
Each artwork is evidence of ‘being in the moment’ and bears repeated, engaged contemplation.
These are ‘specific’ objects in the sense that they are not ‘abstracted’ from another object, nor are they ‘illustrations’ for another’s text or signifier of some elusive ‘other’.
Objects and their relations – constructed part by part, organically composed, contingent unto one another and their place within the whole.
The being of the sculpture is to engage with the ‘real’ they are not intellectually reducible by merely registering material properties, process or context.
That they are visually suggestive is testament to the continued capacity of sculpture as a vehicle for our imagination.
Every sculpture contains the keys to it’s visual unlocking; a network of decisions revealing it’s own making.
Precisely constructed objects of intuition, reflection and enquiry, emphatically present yet resistant.
