The Slade School of Fine Art is concerned with contemporary art and the practice, history and theories that inform it. It provides for the education of professional artists by professional artists and scholars of the history and theory of art. All Slade staff are actively involved in research as well as teaching and between them have a broad and diverse range of interests and expertise. The School was awarded a rating of 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and scored 23/24 in the Quality Assurance Agency Subject Review in December 1999. Recently the Slade made a successful bid for funding (Pound currency symbol1.5m) to enhance their facilities and further develop their infrastructure for research. A large new fully equipped digital studio is now complete and new studio and workshop spaces are due for completion in October 2005. The School is expanding its facilities to give students from all areas of the Slade the opportunity to develop ideas, produce, discuss and present work in a supportive and critically challenging environment.
