Art School, 2006
For her MA exhibition Claudia Ascott created an interior - titled 'Art School 2006' which could only be viewed through a spy-hole. It contained tables, chairs, a white-board, plugs and pipes and included a single natural light source. A previous interior showed her studio completely empty again seen only through a spy-hole. Anonymous, impersonal, inaccessible, these interiors have a calmness and austerity to which we attempt to relate. Claudia's background is in photography, an important medium for her, which she has used extensively to document actual interiors, passageways and occasionally exteriors. All her work has an apparent elegance, beauty and serenity. This aesthetic is counter-posed by a certain anxiety of how we relate to the fact of viewing and interpreting.
