Birdcage, 2005
A painter at the Royal College, Douglas is already attracting attention from high-profile collectors; fashion designer Bruce Oldfield is said to have bought several works featured in her degree show in June. Her paintings hover between figuration and abstraction, achieving a tension between image and gesture that somehow seems both entirely organic and tightly controlled. Her recent small-scale works have an intensely robust quality, with a fleshy palette and an apparent interest in capturing forms that imprison or contain - a bird cage, an animal carcass, a casket-like box - within the confines of the canvas.
