Director - Axis

Sheila joined Axis as Director 2009. She is responsible for the artistic and strategic direction of the organisation.

Throughout her career Sheila has been strongly committed to extending the influence and appreciation of contemporary art. She worked as an exhibitions organiser and collections curator in Southport, Worcester and Birmingham and was the Deputy Director of The New Art Gallery Walsall during its development between 1996 and 2001. After moving to Yorkshire in 2001, she carried out freelance research, writing, evaluation and project management for a range of organisations, including Tate, Contemporary Art Society, Heritage Lottery Fund, engage, CapeUK and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. She is the main author of the book New Art on View (Scala 2006), which documents the many hundreds of works of contemporary art acquired for public collections through the Contemporary Art Society's Special Collection Scheme.

Sheila studied History and French as an undergraduate, followed by an M.Phil in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art and a Museum Studies qualification from the University of Manchester. She is the Chair of Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum and has recently joined the Board of Yorkshire ArtSpace Society.
