Background
The webzine seeks to examine the contemporary art scene from the perspective of Axis's members, to prompt and engage in topical debates and to critically reflect the practice of artists and curators represented across the Axis website.
We welcome expressions of interest for the webzine's content.
We want to explore the practice and current activity of the members on the Axis website and feature critical and discursive texts, interviews, audio and video podcasts and, occassionally, reviews. We are keen to commission content that exploits the dynamic nature of the internet and engages our readers.
For further information see About the webzine or sign up to receive our e-bulletin.
To find out more about the artists and curators represented on Axis see our Art Scene and Art Talk sections. You can also look at newly added works, artists and curators.
Open Call
We have an ongoing open call for Rant writers. Please see The Rant: Pitch for It! for more information about this paid writing opportunity.
General submission guidelines
In the first instance expressions of interest should be made by email to Lesley Guy, Content Curator - lesley@axisweb.org.
You should include the following within your email proposal:
- a brief outline detailing the artists, area of practice and/or issues you intend to address within your submission. Your outline should not exceed 250 words.
- details regarding the format of your contribution i.e. whether this is a text, interview, discussion, podcast or video clip etc. If you are proposing a contribution that uses media, please state your proficiency in using this.
- a CV or biography.
- examples of previously published articles. This is not essential; we do consider contributions from previously unpublished writers.
As a guide, written texts will not be considered if they are more than 1500 words. Podcasts and audio or video clips are either presented as a series of short clips or as one feature (30 mins max).
Any work commissioned to feature in the webzine is done so on the understanding that it is original material that has not been and will not be published elsewhere. We will consider publishing material that has been or will be published in another source but this MUST be made explicit at the time of submission. If you wish to publish material commissioned by Axis with another publication, at a later date you MUST acknowledge Axis as the commissioner of the work.
If you prefer to send your proposal by post we advise that you use registered post and retain a copy for yourself; please enclose a self-addressed envelope if you would like this material returned to you.
The selection process
Submitted material will be reviewed by the editor. Proposals will be selected based on their quality and relevance to the current issues and thematics in the webzine. Submissions are reviewed on an ongoing basis and we will respond to you once your proposal has been considered. Please bear in mind that we only commission a small number of articles each year.
All published material is commissioned in agreement with Axis. If your proposal is selected, a contract will be issued detailing our terms and conditions. For details of our fees please contact Lesley Guy.
