We were a cultural partner at the Manchester Contemporary art fair for the second year this October. Our stand gave information about Axis as well as a selection of work by six artists based in the north of England. We filmed interviews with four of the exhibiting artists which you can watch below.

At the opening of The Manchester Contemporary 2011 we filmed a series of short interviews where we asked people to tell us about their favourite artists and work.

Eileen O'Rourke

Eileen O'Rourke's work investigates the drawing process. Through drawing she asks what am I doing? Whom am I doing it for? And why? This in turn has led to wider questions about the nature of identity, reality and the nature of truth.

Tiago Duarte

Tiago states, 'at the core of my practice lies the expressive potential of the press and the paper I work with'. His work considers the boundaries between printmaking and painting. He explores notions of uniqueness as a counter process to reproduction and edition.

Marc Provins

Marc Provins descibes his practice as two complementary halves - 'intellect' and 'instinct'. Through quiet observation and the careful framing of a simple subject, Provins begins to unravel the complex and cluttered world we inhabit, with his work revealing the thresholds of foreground and background; real and imagined; the past and the present.

Dutton & Swindells

The collaborative work of Steve Dutton and Stephen Swindells can be seen in the context of post-conceptual artistic practices which play with and interrogate images, objects and texts through processes of collage, appropriation and multiple association. The aim of the collaboration is to foster complex interpretations, often from deceptively simple means.

Gareth Kemp

Gareth Kemp often works from photographs, mentally cutting and pasting between photographs and merging images, resulting in repetitions and occlusions in the finished works. The paintings create a sense of unease and often contain figures that appear at odds with the world in which they inhabit. His work is held in many private collections both in the UK and the USA.

Gareth is currently our Artist of the Month, we interviewed him and asked him about working in Liverpool, selling work and constructing paintings.

About Manchester Contemporary:

The Manchester Contemporary 2011 brought together 10 of the UK’s leading commercial galleries and provides an opportunity for audiences to engage with and purchase high calibre contemporary art by a range of international and emerging artists. In the third year, The Manchester Contemporary 2011 had a new exciting development - The Print Room, here visitors were able to purchase a wide range of limited edition prints, with the prints from selected organisations complementing other work shown in the fair.

Artist-led spaces, agencies and partner organisations provided information and presentations during the fair and a tour and talks programme allowed you to find out more about the artists, their work and how to start or develop your collection.
