We are pleased to announce we have launched our first iPhone app, with support from Arts Council England - Yorkshire. The App acts as a guide and interpretive tool for Art in Yorkshire – supported by Tate (AIY), an ambitious programme of exhibitions and events taking place in Yorkshire in 2011.
Led by York Museums Trust, AIY involves nineteen partners across the region from the Bronte Parsonage Museum to Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Tate has helped shape the initiative from the beginning and has supported partners through sharing staff expertise and by lending over 100 artworks from the national collection of British, modern and contemporary international art.
The AIY iPhone app which is being developed by Leeds-based communications agency Fuse8, will provide visitor information alongside material about the artists and their work, including images, quotations, audio and video clips. Marc Fabri, Head of Technical Development at Axis, says: “This is an opportunity to create a digital platform that can be adapted for other regional and national arts events and projects in the future. It’s an exciting move for us which will create a legacy of new skills and increased regional co-operation.”
The concept for the AIY iPhone app emerged from Axis’s involvement with the Artimelt Academy, a digital training programme led by the Leeds-based Culture Company and funded by Arts Council England - Yorkshire. Axis teamed up with Leeds Met Gallery & Studio Theatre to explore the potential for an iPhone app that could support art festivals and exhibition campaigns.
Sheila McGregor, Axis Chief Executive, says: “This project unites our technical know-how with our expertise in presenting artists’ practice. The programme is very broad, from David Hockney showing in York, Hull and Bradford to Damien Hirst in Leeds, and we look forward to creating a rich variety of content and information about the Art in Yorkshire programme.”
Welcome to Yorkshire, the region’s tourism agency, will manage marketing and PR, ensuring that AIY attracts new visitors to the region, as well as encouraging local audiences to visit the attractions on their doorstep.
