Sarah Fisher becomes next Chair of Axis

In November 2010, Sarah Fisher succeeded Susan Royce as Chair of the Board of Trustees of Axis.

Sarah's work in the visual arts

Sarah brings a wealth of experience to the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees, with over 20 years working in the visual arts.

Most recently she was Head of Visual Arts at Arts Council England, North West, where she held responsibility for the portfolio of investment in contemporary art, craft/design and public realm.

Alongside this she took the strategic lead for two national priority areas: Digital Opportunities and Visual Arts.

Previously she was a practising artist and has lectured at the Slade School of Art and Chelsea College of Art and Design.

Sheila McGregor, Chief Executive of Axis, says:
'We are thrilled that Sarah is taking on the role of Chair and confident that she will be a great champion for the organisation and the many artists it supports.'

The importance of digital technology to the arts

Sarah explains why she's especially delighted to be joining Axis now:

'While I worry over future funding and how the arts may fair in leaner times, I find myself drawn to the many cultural commentators who are now championing creative risk and moral challenge in the wake of market failure.

Digital technology provides a vibrant route to engaging with the art and ideas of now.

The problem is finding the time to wade through the many artist blogs and tweets of curators and producers. What's needed is a system which allows discovery, while also embracing the independents and implementing quality controls to filter out the noise.

It is clear to me that we need an art establishment in new technology.

Which is where Axis comes in...

Striving for quality - visitors to Axis surf a directory of artists and arts professionals who have been through an initial selection process.

Embracing profiles - guest curators, writers and arts professionals signpost significant artists and practice through the selected programmes.

Encouraging ideas - the excellent Dialogue section is all about commissioning and inviting current critical discussion.

And just as importantly, Axis provides an easy to use navigation model which takes the pain out of surfing!'

Many thanks to Susan Royce

Sarah takes over from Susan Royce after eight years as the Chair of the Axis Board of Trustees.

Susan arrived at a moment of significant change in 2002 and has been instrumental
in helping Axis develop its services and reputation. We are very grateful to her for
her sympathetic and purposeful leadership over the last few years and look forward
to her continued support and friendship in a less formal capacity.
