This year, we have offered MAstar Maya Ramsay a funded studio space at the Florence Trust, London, which will allow her time and space, free of other pressures, to create a new body of work. The award covers the rent on a studio at the Florence Trust, London, for 12 months, beginning in August 2010 and continuing until the end of July 2011, when all the studio-holders will show their work in a final exhibition.
Sheila McGregor, Axis Chief Executive says,
'We are thrilled that Maya Ramsay will be the first recipient of the Axis/Florence Trust Award.
She is an unusual and accomplished artist, who will no doubt take full advantage of a year's funded studio space at the Florence Trust.
This partnership with a well-respected studio organisation in London is a welcome opportunity to extend the impact of MAstars - one of the most influential programmes on the Axis website.'
Maya will be documenting her experiences and progress at the Florence Trust in the form of a blog. We will also be doing a series of filmed interviews with Maya throughout the year so watch this space!
Application for the Axis/Florence Trust Award was open to 2009's MAstars artists only. Axis has made a two year commitment to the award and so we will also be offering 2010's MAstars artists the opportunity of a Florence Trust residency in 2011. Normal application to Florence Trust residency is, of course, open to any artist.
