Guest speakers: Patrick Henry (Director, Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool) in conversation with Dr Derek Horton

The Engine House Cafe, October 2008

Discussion

Patrick Henry gave a (very) brief survey of the development and importance of contemporary photography galleries since the 1970s. Artist/writer Dr Derek Horton opened up the debate with questions about the relevance of a photography-specific gallery today, and the use of photography by artists.

Artist in Residence

Joe Mawson was the Cafe Artistique artist-in-residence for this event. He began by reconstructing 'Downfall, 2007' by Alex Hartley (shown above) by constructing a scale diorama from cardboard and re-photographing it.

This became a starting point for discussion about the currency of conceptual photographic work, and how it operates outside of its original context.
