Discussion Patrick Henry gave a (very) brief survey of the development and importance of contemporary photography galleries since the 1970s. Artist/writer Dr Derek Horton opened up the debate with questions about the relevance of a photography-specific gallery today, and the use of photography by artists. He began by reconstructing 'Downfall, 2007' by Alex Hartley (shown above) by constructing a scale diorama from cardboard and re-photographing it. This became a starting point for discussion about the currency of conceptual photographic work, and how it operates outside of its original context. Ways of Looking
During September and October, Leeds and Bradford are the undoubted destinations for photography and new media, with the first edition of Ways of Looking. Photography and new media exhibitions, talks, films and events are taking place in museums, historic houses, contemporary galleries, cinemas, stately homes and even a railway station.
