Criteria for the Axis curator directory

The Axis curator directory aims to represent the breadth of contemporary creative curatorial practice in the UK and internationally.

The Curator Directory profiles curators who regard curating as an artistic, social and critical undertaking and whose curatorial projects reflect the broad range of artistic practice represented on Axis. By inviting curators based overseas to join the directory, we hope to encourage international curators to initiate and develop projects with emerging and mid-career UK-based artists. We also welcome applications from recent graduates from postgraduate curating courses.

Curator application criteria

You should demonstrate that you have established a curatorial practice and have curated at least two different projects. The application should also articulate how your curatorial practice is relevant to the Axis community of practising artists. Recent graduates should demonstrate that they are continuing to develop their curatorial practice.

All applications are reviewed by a curatorial panel: consisting of Axis staff - Curator, Directory Coordinator,  Outreach Coordinator, Communications Manager and Arts Administrator.

Axis has the right to decline any application that it considers does not meet the above criteria. It normally takes up to two weeks for an application to be assessed. Due to the amount of applications we receive we regret that we are unable to provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants. Curators can reapply after a period of 12 months.

Support statement (150-300 words)

Applicants must write a statement in support of their application which outlines the reasons why you wish to be included on the Axis Curator Directory. This text will not be published and will be viewed only by the curatorial panel.

Curator statement (150-500 words)

This statement will be the main text on your Curator Profile Page. You should present a general overview detailing your past curatorial projects, projects which may be in development and brief biographical information. (You do not have to list your education qualifications or curated exhibitions here – this information will be presented under the 'CV Entries' section that you can add once your application has been accepted.)

Curated projects visual material

Applications must include information about two of your curated projects. The information should consist of a project text (minimum 150 words) and a project image. Once your application has been accepted, you may also upload up to four other documents to represent each project: these include images, PDF files, audio and video clips. You must obtain permission to reproduce the images, video and audio clips on the Axis website from the relevant copyright holders prior to submitting the application.
