Our remit
Axis has a remit for representing recent developments in UK contemporary art to a large and increasingly international audience online.
We introduced selection criteria in 2005 and all artists who have joined the Axis directory have gone through a selection process.
Why select?
As a not-for-profit organisation, funded by Arts Council England, Axis serves a large constituency of artists, art professionals and art lovers who want to support new and distinctive artwork.
That's why our selection criteria (below) emphasise innovation, enquiry and awareness of current debates and issues in visual arts practice. It's also why we sometimes decline artists whose points of reference we judge to be 'modern' rather than 'contemporary'.
Does Axis show work in all media?
We represent all kinds of fine and applied art practice, from traditional media to installation, performance, photography, film, video, new media and sound-based artwork.
Can I apply if I'm based outside the UK?
Axis membership is open to artists living outside the UK, but only if they can demonstrate that they are contributing to the contemporary art scene here.
Can I apply if I'm a student?
If you're in the final year or have graduated in the last 12 months from a recognised BA art course or equivalent, you can apply for our new Early career membership.
How are applications assessed?
Our selection process is quick – we will normally get back to you within two weeks. Applications are assessed internally by our curatorial team, which encompasses artistic, curatorial and art historical expertise.
Selection criteria
When assessing applications, we look for the following:
In your work
- Distinctive visual qualities
- A meaningful subject or concept
- Technical accomplishment or successful realisation of ideas
- Evidence of enquiry and reflection
- A critical framework that is 'contemporary' rather than 'modern'
In your supporting material
- Good photographic documentation
- A CV showing evidence of your professional activity
- Awareness of current debates and issues in visual arts practice
- A clear and informative statement about your practice
After you have submitted the application
You will normally hear within two weeks whether your application has been successful or not. Axis has the right to decline any application that it considers does not meet the above criteria. Owing to the number of applications we receive, we regret that we are unable to provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants. Artists can reapply after a period of 12 months.
Thank you for considering membership of the Axis Artist Directory. We hope you will apply!
