This piece is made from Lichens and is a topographically detailed map of the South American countries that are home to the Amazon rainforest, often refered to as the 'lungs of the world'. Lichens have evolved mechanisms to recycle toxic chemicals in the environment by forming unique metal compounds. This means that Lichens play a vital ecological role and are used to monitor environmental pollution.
