This work was originally part of a triptych. I found that exhibiting just two of the components either hung next to each other or separately was enough. The piece, like some my other work makes references to certain aspects of painting. Originally trained as a painter I experimented with sculpture and relief work before taking to the camera, before this photography had just been a means of documenting my art – I hadn't thought of using it for its artistic properties. Painting for me had become a tired medium and I felt I could still discuss notions of the subject through photography. In this instance Newman, Rothko and Mondrian have influenced me aesthetically and my readings on postmodernist thought inspired its concept.
