Illuminating the Darkness, 2007

I usually call on the assistance of digital technology when creating artwork, as this is where my strengths and passion lie. This painting looks similar to a digital image and this is because it was designed using a computer graphics package. The painting was reproduced and juxtaposed onto the wall using an OHP and templates produced from card to achieve accurate lines and curves.

Theories of the sublime were attached to this painting juxtaposing such apparent opposites such as light and dark. With the notion of the sublime, the light is seen as an optimistic and wonderful source, while the dark is seen as a fearful and pessimistic bully that can also encompass feelings of terror and self-preservation. This painting was created to offer comfort from the dark. In almost all cultures, there exist stories and legends warning of the dangers of nighttime. I have a fear of the dark and felt that by painting light bulbs blooming and growing towards the ceiling it would provide a positive symbol of light, illuminating the darkness, eradicating our fears.
