The work, "England V Chile" was made using a camcorder, recording the actions of the fans watching a football match in a pub. The camera was placed at the centre of the screen - so as the audience, we see another audience. I have removed probably one of the most important factors of football - the sound. We are left to observe a group, who unbeknown to themselves, are being observed. The stillness, intensity and concentration that is in these faces is distilled during play, with a sudden relaxation at half-time. We become engaged with the audience and surprisingly gripped waiting for their reactions to the match, so as we can discover who is winning or the most recent action in play. This engagement is taken a step further with the comments from the immediate audience appearing as subtitles at the bottom of the screen- thus illustrating the fans' notion that they too could be manager! It is the fans who are usually doing the watching, but here they are being viewed, and it is their performance which is dissected under the microscope.
