009 - 012 Valerie & Countryside, 2011

Using found footage in the form of anonymous home movies bought from eBay as part of house clearances these films have had new voiceovers specially written and performed by actors. Each film through disassociation with its creator has lost its original meaning or narrative and the act of creating a new one from the observed sequences, from hints and moments, brings these back to factional life.

Reels that can be identified as belonging together are digitally transferred then viewed by each writer in order for them to find a visual starting point around which research can build a factional narrative. The resulting scripts are then performed, digitally aged and added to the existing reels. Each story is a mixture of autobiography, historical events and emotional response to the original film.

Duration 17’50”

Digitised 8mm film, single screen DVD.
