The photograph contains echoes of our prehistoric, singled-celled, aquatic origins. Charles Darwin believed human vision evolved from the light sensitive ‘eye-spots’ of single-celled organisms. The photograph is created by millions of such creatures as they carryout photosynthesis. When photographic negatives are placed in front of them, they move towards the varying degrees of light and form eerie, temporary images.
