Doll-Rug-Floor-Lamp, 2005 - 2011

Surreal stream of consciousness which started from a doll-weave idea and morphed into a scenic rug with dolls stuck on with light shining through. Originally intended to be placed on a perspex a-frame over an antique French white iron scrollwork fishtank stand with a fluorescent light lying on top of the stand, under the tented rug. None of these things existed and due to lack of workshop facilities where I could have made one given the right tools, I improvised with a domestic laundry airing rack, cutting back the plastic coating to reveal the iron rods, breaking off the bottom 'rungs' and using an old (and rather cherished) vintage Ikea clip-on lamp in place of the fluorescent fixture...

It is a quirky kitchy thing that makes me (and others, it turns out) smile, just as for Duchamp, the Bicycle Sheel on the bar stool was originally made for his own viewing pleasure, in his studio (he likened it to the pleasure of watching the flames dance in a fireplace)This is my fire-screen, if you will.
