Shopping Around (2011), 2001 - 2011
‘Shopping Around’ (2011) includes a text written in 2001 and previously published in written form. Now an audio recording, the autobiographical narrative recounts a journey between several cities, reflecting on the similarities and differences between them.
The opportunity to re-present the work came as part of an exhibition in an un-furbished, never-let unit within a shopping centre in Leeds. References within the narrative to now defunct companies Borders, C&A and Railtrack seemed particularly fitting in this setting. Originally conceived as a contemplation on the place of individuality within our consumer culture, the work now serves to highlight the impermanence of corporate as well as individual existence.
