I Could Have Been A Contender is a full size naked self portrait (which includes the artist's children and grandchildren). It is intended as a tongue in cheek response to and comment on society's unrealistic expectations of women; most importantly to the aging process; women over 50 are rarely depicted naked unless they have been air brushed or surgically altered to connote sexuality and youth. Also very few people conform to perfectly balanced proportions(whatever the current fashion states the body should be or measure).The painting also comments on the joys of traditional nuclear family life.... or not as the case may be!
