Poetry Discs, 2006 - 2008

Seven sparkling dichroic glass discs in a row, hand engraved with 'A Poem for Manchester' (by poet Mike Duff), against the background of a glistening black granite water wall. These are like windows coming out of the dense black granite giving the impression of portholes on a stately ship, the colours glinting and reflecting around and behind them. The poem is copper wheel engraved in a swirl from disc to disc following the bee; a reminder of Manchester's industrial past. The Manchester Bee is a symbol of hard work and is part of the city's coat of arms.

The artwork's mirroring quality offers an intimacy, drawing people in: seeing ourselves within the art, like checking your tie or make up before leaving the house. At a distance the discs stand out with dynamic glassy blues, greens and purples shining out from the black background.
