In the 15th century Dutch workers threw their wooden shoes (Sabots) into machines to stop them working, they were demanding nothing more than better working conditions, from this we derive the word SABOTAGE.
In December 2008 Muntadar al-Zaidi an Iraqi Journalist threw his shoes at George Bush. Throwing shoes is an insult of the highest order in Iraqi society.
The latter of these acts has spawned numerous expressions of shoe based dissent.
You are welcome to add your own shoes to this installation thus stating your dissent about the current political system, your gesture will not go unnoticed, (if you do not feel like going home in bare feet you are invited to return with more shoes to add).
At the end of this exhibition all the shoes will be returned to Planet Aid and either sent to the developing nations or sold in the UK to raise funds for development projects in India and Africa.
