Fern Thomas

For the Bees, 2010

For the Bees, led by artists Owen Griffiths and Fern Thomas, was a participatory public artwork that stemmed from a shared concern about the bees.

For the Bees worked with musician Mial Watkins to compose a piece of choral music based on the sounds of bees that was sung by a specially formed bee choir to the bees in their hives. It was hoped that this act of singing and the inherent ‘goodwill’ of the singers would have a positive effect on the health of the bees.

For the Bees worked in partnership with International Year of Biodiversity 2010, The Co-operative, Safle, Swansea Metropolitan University, Taliesin Arts Centre and Swansea Community Farm.

It was short listed for Amateur Scientist of the Year 2010 on BBC Radio 4.

The sound piece will be issued as a limited edition art work on 10” vinyl.
