Snail Derby, 2010

On Sunday 27 June Sarah Sparkes curated The Animal Fair on Camberwell Green, London.

From 1279 until 1855 a fayre was held on Camberwell Green, one of the many attractions was a menagerie of wild animals captured from distant lands. In homage to the beasts of the ancient Camberwell Fayre, artists will create a fair and foul enclosure of luxurious and curious beasts, transforming the Green into a safari park for human animals and their keepers, with beastly goings on, side shows and a program of performance in ‘the big top’.

For The Animal Fair I invited people to each choose a snail to enter into the Snail Derby.

Following the rules set by the Snail Racing Championships held annually in Norfolk, the snails were placed in an inner circle and the victor was the snail to cross the line of an outer circle 13 inches away.

Arnold proved practically unbeatable.
