We often use the fig leaf as an ironic method of self-censorship and, inspired by the brief for Travelling Light, we chose to embroider using colours that had Shakespearian qualities, imagining 16th Century travellers adorned in richly coloured garments.
We created our title after researching the symbolism of the fig leaf. 'A Flimsy Disguise' is in Shakespeare's 'Merchant of Venice' - a quote from Genesis. iii. 7. FALL refers to the American term for autumn, the fall of the Roman Empire, the fall of Adam and Eve and escaping repression for the 'Pleasure Capital of Europe'.
