Matt Cook

Portobello Sound Map, 2008

'Portobello Sound Map is a project to create a map of the ambient soundscape particular to Portobello upon the garden of one of its residents. Matt Cook will spend a day in Portobello recording sounds and talking to local residents about what sounds might be found. Matt will bring the sounds he has recorded together for a short performance incorporating a variety of sound makers, during which he will attempt to use the geography of the garden to create a sonic map of the district.' (Matt Cook, Portobello Sound Map statement)

Presented as part of Garden Gallery, an exhibition of contemporary art in the front gardens of Portobello, Edinburgh, Matt spent the 1st and 2nd August recording and compiling sounds for a performance using 7 cassette players.
