Surrogate is a five year project that started in 2001 with an image of a river stone from the banks of the Mississippi near Chester in Illinois posted to and photographed on a beach in the Isle of Man then subsequently posted back as a postcard to America. Over 30 photographs document the displacement of the pebble as it travels to various locations around the globe. Surrogate is about home and sense of belonging and what happens when displacement or migration occurs – it charts the journey taken.
