Persistence, - 2007

'Persistence', featured the growth of six indigenous plants from the Lizard, charting their development from dry seed to first leaves. Presented on a flat screen monitor set within the soil and rubble of a rectangular pit in the receiver block at the Happidrome, the sequence drew the viewer's gaze downwards, accentuating the darkness surrounding it to focus on the plants' progress. The capacity for growth is astonishing when observed at close quarters and epitomises the place of plants in reclaiming and hiding the evidence of former human agency, albeit never fully eradicating the palimpsest of those actions. It also referenced the knowledge and folklore surrounding plants and how this was and continues to be transmitted.
