Situation Leeds 2007 - Cultural Travelling in Leeds Communities, - 2007

Postgraduate Degree Show (2007) 'CAST' University of Leeds, School of Fine Art, History of Art & Cultural Studies (leedscast.org).

Janis Rafailidou attempts to cross cultural boundaries by situating Leeds based communities including Chinese, Asian Muslim, Sikh, Polish, West Indian and Greek groups within an exhibition space. She creates a form of cultural bazaar where visitors are welcome to interact as foreigners inside this multicultural environment and in doing so, engage with discourses of displacement and integration. Along with the videos on display, Janis will host a one-off site specific event in her installation. Inside her video-installation Janis will organise a meal in the exhibition among the 7 different Communities. The event will be documented and presented to the exhibitions visitors as a video record during the show, on the dinner table where the communities lunched together.
