tele tactilis, 2006

This work is the first of a series of six paintings. Working on an unprimed canvas, the oil is allowed to flow and bleed through the canvas fibres. Liquid latex is poured onto the surface and allowed to set, and small latex moulds are fixed to the surface, forming air-tight bubbles. These are then filled to varying levels with liquid oil by means of a hypodermic syringe. Parts of the work are also stitched using surgical thread to form bundles and radiating threads. Stemming from my intense interest in the skin and tactile sensation, it was my intention that the forms and patterns in this and related works recall epidermal tissues, fat cells, and nerves. The overall intention of the work is to create a highly organic and corporeal effect, encouraging the viewer to touch as well as look.
