I See This I Hear That, 2005

I See This I Hear That is an ongoing diary, kept since 2002, of conversations overheard, and events witnessed, while using public transport in London.

The diary is displayed on a moving message board sign, the type used to display travel information at bus shelters and train stations.

A particular type of focus and curiosity is required to attend to these scraps of conversations an alertness to the possibility that at any moment an event may unfold, yet not anticipating that anything will actually occur, for in the very act of anticipation, the focus is somehow lost.

The title of the work is derived from a series of poems titled I Do This, I Do That written by Frank OHara, whose work celebrated amongst other things, life in New York City.
