The Soft Chair, 1994

I made a set of Soft Chairs for the Directors Room at the National Gallery in London and still consider it one of my favourite chairs.  It is a small very condensed piece of work with 74 components making a light yet strong construction.  The back is designed to flex, making it unusual and very comfortable.  The back joint is a study which I could talk about at length.  I have since repeated the piece for private clients with 200-year- old Russian reindeer leather seat and back.

41.5cm x 46cm x 87cm

Fumed oak slats, oak bark tanned leather, upholstery (under seat)
