The NHS Trust, which commissioned the work, wished to extend the perception of the hospital as being a place concerned with creativity, rehabilitation, care and cure and to create an inviting atmosphere from the moment of entry into the hospital. The design is inspired by the human body as seen at electron micrograph scale, giving the beauty in complex mosaic tiling of various cell types and structures, details of nuclei, nerves, muscles, chromosomes and DNA. The imagery is based upon scientific research. I hope that this mosaic makes an emotional and attractive and accessible connection between the arts and the sciences.
