Flat light readings 1 - 8, 2001
The images were created through pencil transfer of Xerox ink onto strips of Somerset paper then collaged together. Graduated tones of greys to black are produced through careful pressure to create soft tonal variations, a meditation on the expanses and variety of greys (influenced by Gerhard Richter's Grey Paintings). The Xerox ink used creates a flatness, a dryness, arranged like a computer readout or barcodes, echoing scientific readings with lines of white to disrupt the greys.
