Floor piece, detail, 1996
Made up of twelve medium density fibreboard tiles, sprayed with fluorescent paint (two pack system). Industrially made balustrade with polymer acrylic finish (black). Illusory hole, cut into tile and filled with disc covered in black velvet. Sensor in right hand corner reacts to movement, setting off interlude of five seconds of darkness, alternating with five seconds of imagery, (eighty slides). This acts as an interruption to the viewers adaptation to the space. My intention is that the piece be visually engaging, a perceptual experience that is changing, mutable and subject to doubt. People are asked to remove their shoes at the entrance and are invited to stroll around. The sensation from the floor tiles is of cold.
