Dominic Hawgood

Shrine, - 2012

‘In order to become memorials… what matters is the fact that something artificial take place, some act that will mark the space. This making artificial is possibly the simplest form of what a monument is.’ Darian Leader, The New Black

In 2009 I traveled to the US for research, and began to develop a religious theme within a body of work. I experimented photographing church road signs in profile and was subsequently awarded an artist residency in Texas. This I recently completed, during which I was able to produce a new series of work. The final images are multiple composites, shot using a panoramic mount system in order to carefully control detail. The aim was to transform these everyday structures and imbue them with a monumental, shrine like presence.
